Country Club Historic Neighborhood was developed in the early 1900s in conjunction with the Denver Country Club and was designated as a Historic Landmark District in 1990. This powerful and elite enclave is nested in an area that can reach all that is Denver in one moment. From the lively nightlife in the Downtown area, the arts of the museum district, the Broadway shows at the Denver Performing Arts Center, to the fine shopping in 160 designer stores in Cherry Creek, once you are through the gates of this lavish paradise called Country Club, everything is at your fingertips. You will feel you have found the pot of gold at the end of the proverbial rainbow.
In the first years of this century, a group of wealthy men who had organized the Overland Park Club changed the name to the Denver Country Club and began looking for a new site. In 1902, the club bought 120 acres along Cherry Creek, and the same day this group incorporated the Fourth Avenue Realty Company and purchased the land to the north. The Fourth Avenue Realty Company then chose William E. Fisher as its principal designer and the rest is history. Fisher designed landscaped parkways as the defining element of the area and based his design on concepts that were defined by Frederick Law Olmstead.
In its inception, Country Club attracted nearly every famous architect in the region, many of whom chose to build their own homes there. Architectural masterpieces were built which would forever distinguish this area as a neighborhood of notable opulence. Denver Country Club itself was designed with the clubhouse at its center, complete with exquisite entertainment and dining rooms, and a gracious golf course.
The high quality of architectural design and construction of the substantial homes and the feeling of park-like spaciousness defines the Country Club Neighborhood. Instant recognition of Country Club’s significance was first made in 1979 when the western half of the district was listed in the National Register of Historic Places. The L-shaped district now includes 380 residences, most of which were constructed during the period of architectural significance, 1902 through 1945.
Historical significance relates to its association with Denver’s social, political, and economic elite, including figures such as Mayor Robert Speer, founders of most of Denver’s major banks, and heads of some of Denver’s major mining, oil, sugar, and real estate companies. The district incorporated some of Denver’s finest examples of the Denver Square style and the Gothic, Colonial, Mediterranean, and other early 20th century eclectic revival styles. Many of these houses were designed by Denver’s most prominent architects including Fisher and Fisher, Benedict, Biscoe, Gove and Walsh, and Varian and Sterner. Country Club’s geographic significance relates to the four different “streetscape types” found in the district, variety unique in Denver’s historic residential areas.

Recreational facilities, including tennis and swimming clubs are abundant in the area. Resident golfers enjoy the state of the art links of the Cherry Hills and Glenmoor Country Clubs. Distinguished neighborhoods within the community include Cherry Hills North, Old Country Club, Cherry Hills Farms, Glenmoor, Charlou, Covington, Cherry Hills Park, Sunset Drive and the beautiful Buell Mansion.
The Denver Country Club Neighborhood is located just west of the chic Cherry Creek Shopping Center and neighborhood. With its large sprawling lots, historic homes, and proximity to both the actual Denver Country Club and the Cherry Creek Fashion Mall it is one of the most exclusive areas in Denver. Wide, tree lined streets add to the elegant and exclusive feel of the neighborhood.
The area just North of 6th Avenue to 8th Avenue is often referred to as Country Club North. This area has slightly more modest homes. The homes in Country Club Place range in price from $1,000,000 to $4,000,000; homes in Country Club North are attractively priced from $400,000 to $2,000,000. This area is next to Cheesman Park, which provides plenty of open space and recreation opportunities. The average age of Country Clubers is 44 years old.
The area just south of Denver Country Club is known alternately as Country Club South and Washington Park North. All three of these neighborhoods are centrally located, making for an easy commute to Downtown Denver, the nearby shopping center, popular mouth watering eateries, cutting edge art studios, and neighborly gathering places. Even Washington Park with its own historical gardens and abundance of athletic offerings is only a short bike ride away. And a favorite regular on any Country Clubers calendar is an evening of wine and magic at the Denver Botanical Gardens.
